BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The two-time defending Patriot League champion Lehigh football team will play its first Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since 2003 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Navy. The first meeting between Lehigh and Navy since 1987 will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
The Sept. 15 date was the originally scheduled date for the contest. Last summer, the game was moved to week zero (Aug. 25) after a scheduling memorandum from the American Athletic Conference (Navy's football conference) requested conference schools to hold that date open for a potential league game. With Navy ultimately not scheduled for a conference game on Sept. 15, Navy requested to move the game back to its originally scheduled date. This marks a change from the Aug. 25 date, which was published in several locations, including last month's Lehigh-Lafayette football game program.
Lehigh realizes this late schedule change may have impacted plans already made, but Lehigh wanted to preserve the opportunity for its football student-athletes to play a game at Navy. The Mountain Hawks' coaches supported playing the contest on its originally scheduled Sept. 15 date.
Patriot League members in most other sports, Lehigh and Navy have met 21 times on the gridiron dating back to 1889. The Midshipmen lead the all-time series 15-6, but Lehigh did claim the most recent meeting 24-9 on Sept. 19, 1987.
The Mountain Hawks' last game against a FBS opponent was a 35-17 loss at Connecticut on Oct. 4, 2003.
Lehigh will officially announce its complete 2018 football schedule at a later date.
