
Defending Champion American Hands Lehigh First League Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Four-time defening Patriot League champion American ended an eight-match run by Lehigh, including a four-match win streak to start league play, and handed the Mountain Hawks their first league loss of the season with a 3-0 defeat on Friday night. American improves to 12-7 on the year, while Lehigh falls to 13-6. Both teams are now 4-1 in league play.
Lehigh could not match the offensive efficiency displayed by the Eagles who hit .360 on the night and had three players reach double-figures. The Mountain Hawks put together a .191 attack percentage for the match and were led by Ana Spangenberg's 12 kills.
The first set was dominated by American as the Eagles hit .400 in the set and posted a 19-9 kill advantage over Lehigh. Tied 8-8, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run which proved to be enough to put the set away.
Lehigh put together its best performance of the night in the second set, but came up on the losing end of a 25-23 decision. The Mountain Hawks hit .326 in the set and compiled a 21-18 kill margin over the Eagles. With the set tied 10-10, Lehigh began to pull away and opened a lead on a 3-0 run. LU began to break open some more breathing room with an 18-13 lead and then had a victory in sight with a 23-20 advantage on a kill by Sabrina Lancaster. The Eagles held Lehigh at 23 points and produced a 5-0 run to win the set, capped off by back-to-back kills by Helena Elbaek.
The third set was dominated again by American as Lehigh hit just .086 in the set and the Eagles compiled a percentage of .324. The Mountain Hawks kept the set close through the middle and cut the deficit to one at 14-13. A few Lehigh miscues, combined with a some kills by American culminated in a 4-0 AU run and a Lehigh timeout. Out of the break, the Eagles went on a 7-2 to close out the set en route to a 25-16 victory.
Lehigh's previous eight-match win streak was the longest streak since a 10-match run in 2014. The Mountain Hawks will look to keep their current six-match home win streak alive tomorrow when they return to Grace Hall to face Loyola in a Patriot League match at 1 p.m.
