Lehigh to continue spring season at Wildcat Invitational, beginning Monday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Billy Johns will look to defend his individual title as the Lehigh men's golf team returns to the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Villanova, beginning Monday at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa.

Twenty-one teams will compete in the Wildcat Invitational, with 18-hole rounds set for both Monday and Tuesday in the 36-hole event. The Wildcat Invitational will be played at approximately 6800 yards from the silver and bronze tees at White Manor Country Club.

Johns shot two under par 140 (73-67) to become the first Lehigh male medalist in an event with 10 or more teams since 2004. Lehigh finished fifth in a 16 team field last season. Senior David Olexson is the only other Mountain Hawk who participated in last year's tournament as he finished in a tie for 68th place at 160.

Lehigh opened its spring with a second place finish in the four team Patriot Spring Intercollegiate, March 14-15 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Johns finished tied for the lead through 36 holes and finished second after losing on the second playoff hole. Freshman Johnny Hsu joined Johns in the top 10, while Olexson and freshmen Max Redetzke and Lee Hammerschmidt rounded out Lehigh's scoring team, while freshman Tim Wolak competed as an individual.

This year's field includes Binghamton, Bucknell, Cleveland State, Colgate, Delaware, Detroit Mercy, Fordham, Iona, Lafayette, La Salle, LeMoyne, Manhattan, Monmouth, Rider, Siena, St. Bonaventure, St. John's, St. Peter's, and Wagner in addition to Lehigh and host Villanova.

Binghamton is the defending team champion, defeating Delaware by three strokes.

Lehigh will play with Binghamton and Bucknell on Monday with their individuals going off the first tee at 8:20 a.m. and their scoring players following in 10 minute intervals between 8:30 and 9:10.

Tee times for Tuesday's second round will be announced following the completion of Monday's first round.
