Women’s Swimming Captures Dominating Win Over Loyola

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team captured 13 wins in 16 events on Saturday, including winning 13 of 14 swim events to top Loyola (Md.) by a score of 199-94. Junior Kaitlyn Ruffing tied a pool record led the team with four wins on the day, sophomore Julianne Koch and junior Kelly Carroll added three wins apiece, while seniors Melissa Feeney and Courtney Patterson each tallied a pair of victories.

The team kicked off the day by capturing first place in the 400 medley relay where J. Koch, Carroll, Feeney and Ruffing took the top time of 3:58.21. The 400 free relay team later ended the day with a victory of its own with Carolyn Koch, Carroll, Courtney Ferreira and Ruffing combining on a time of 3:34.93.

In addition to the medley relay win, J. Koch took the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:53.10) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.13). She also grabbed a third place finish in the 50 free (25.01).

Ruffing swam ahead of the pack in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, tying the Jacobs Pool benchmark of 51.32 seconds in the 100 free, a record that she set earlier this season. Her 50 free time of 23.73 was her seventh win in the event this season.

Carroll also notched an individual win in the 100 yard butterfly in 58.55. Feeney grabbed first place in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.98) and continued her strong day with a runner-up showing in the 100 breast (1:09.49).

Patterson collected two individual wins of her own, first in the 1,000 yard freestyle, outpacing the field in 10:43.06. She later earned the 400 IM title (4:38.50) and a second place showing on the 'B' 400 relay team.

Sydney Bornstein took home another win in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:07.08. She also finished second behind Carroll in the 100 butterfly and was second on the 'B' 400 medley relay team.

Megan Thompson was victorious in the 500 freestyle (5:11.65), just edging out teammate Cora Summerfield (5:11.86), who finished second. The duo were also members of the runner-up 400 free relay team.

Kate Bergin took first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.52, and put forth a trio of second place performances in the 200 backstroke, 400 IM and 400 medley relay.

On the boards, Rayna Smilowitz took second place in the three meter diving with a score of 200.02, and added  a third place performance of 190.05 on the one meter board.

Lehigh returns to Jacobs Pool next Saturday, January 23 in their final home meet of the season against Patriot League foe Bucknell. The meet is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
