
Women’s Swimming Takes 182-117 Decision at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team won 11 events on Saturday to pick up a 182-117 win at Drexel in the team's final meet before the Patriot League Championships. The squad's second win in as many meets moves their overall record to 7-2 on the season. Courtney Patterson, Kate Bergin and Kelly Carroll each grabbed a pair of wins on the day, and Kaitlyn Ruffing notched two individual wins plus a victory on the 400 freestyle relay team.
Cora Summerfield picked up the team's first win of the day in the 1,000 yard freestyle pacing the field in 10:33.30. Bergin finished in 10:37.09 to help the Mountain Hawks finish one-two in the event.
Patterson followed that up with the first of her two wins on the afternoon, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.97). Carolyn Koch (2nd/1:55.02) and Julianne Koch (3rd/1:55.12) joined the action and helped Lehigh to a sweep in the event. Patterson later grabbed a win in the 500 free in 5:10.13, where Meghan Thompson swam a 5:14.40 race, landing her in third.
Bergin swam a 1:00.34 time in the 100 backstroke, winning the sprint and leading the Mountain Hawks to another sweep, as Julia Perry (1:01.93) and Megan Schappert (1:02.49) helped round out the top three. Bergin made it 2-for-2 on the day in the backstrokes, winning the 200 back in 2:09.97, one place better than J. Koch, who finished in second place in 2:10.70.
Carroll took the top spot in the 100 fly, touching in at 57.94 seconds, with Summerfield coming in second (59.55). Carroll was also victorious in the 200 yard IM, besting the field with a mark of 2:09.26. Carroll also finished second in the 200 fly (2:08.43), finishing runner-up to teammate Sydney Bornstein, who continued her impressive string of wins in the event with a time of 2:07.69.
Ruffing once again swept the titles in the 50 and 100 frees, winning the 50 yard sprint in 23.80 and the 100 free in 51.71 seconds. C. Koch took third in the 50 yard free (24.57) and placed second in the 100 free. Thompson rounded out the top three sweep in the 100 freestyle for Lehigh with a time of 54.83.
The women's day in the pool concluded with a victory for the 400 freestyle 'A' relay team of the Courtney Ferreira, Ruffing and the Koch sisters, who paced the field in 3:34.50. Lehigh's 'B' team of Thompson, Patterson, Julia Perry and Abby Thomson also scored in the event by placing third (3:40.86).
The Mountain Hawks will now have 18 days off to prepare of the Patriot League Championships in Annapolis, Maryland on Feb. 17-20.
