Mountain Hawks make home debut this weekend in Crosstown Invite

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will open its home slate in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the Crosstown Invitational. Lehigh begins the tournament against Saint Peter's Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Marist at 7 p.m. Saturday's action opens at 10 a.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson, followed by a 3:30 p.m. match against Morehead State. Free video of all four Lehigh matches will be available on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks are 1-2 on the young season after competing in the season-opening JMU Classic last weekend. Lehigh dropped a straight-set match to Northern Arizona to open the season before claiming a 3-1 win over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Mountain Hawks then fell in a tight 3-0 battle against host JMU. Senior Stephanie Slater led the team with 30 kills over the weekend, while classmate Ana Vrhel hit an impressive .392 with 28 kills and 19 total blocks. Senior Amy Matula dished a team-best 57 assists, while junior Mariah Brantley recorded 55 digs.
Friday's 4 p.m. match will be Saint Peter's season opener. The Peacocks finished their 2014 campaign with a 4-28 overall record and 2-17 mark in MAAC play. Saint Peter's returns last season's kills leader in senior Lauren Behrens who tallied 316 kills a season ago. The Peacocks' short roster of eight players is comprised of one senior, two juniors and five freshmen. The Mountain Hawks captured a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15) win over Saint Peter's in last year's Crosstown Invite and hold a 13-4 all-time record against the Peacocks.
Marist is 1-2 this season after competing in the Lamar Invite in Texas last weekend. The Red Foxes dropped a straight-set match to Alabama Birmingham before coming back with a 3-1 win against Texas Southern. Marist closed out the weekend by suffering a 3-0 loss to host Lamar. The Red Foxes hit .168 for the weekend compared to their opponents' .222 hitting percentage. Kelsey Ediger led the squad with 32 kills, while Liz Gassman accumulated a team-best .357 hitting percentage with 13 kills. Amanda Schlegel leads the team with 79 assists and Lexi Millington has recorded a team-best 30 digs. Marist claimed a tight 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 12-25, 15-13) match in last year's Crosstown Invite. Lehigh is 7-5 all-time against the Red Foxes.
Fairleigh Dickinson carries a 1-2 record into this weekend's Crosstown Invite. The Knights won a 3-0 match against Hampton in their season opener before dropping 1-3 and 0-3 contests to Liberty and UNCG, respectively. Fairleigh Dickinson has hit just .091 as a team compared to their opponents' average of .221. Alex Lolland leads the squad with 23 kills, while Allison Butler (48) and Corey Lostetter (35) are the respective team leaders in assists and digs. Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson last met in 2013 when the Mountain Hawks captured a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13) victory. Lehigh is 11-12 all-time versus the Knights.

The Eagles are 1-2 heading into the tournament after earning a straight-set win over Canisius and dropping matches to Marshall (3-0) and Indiana State (3-2) last weekend. Merideth Jewell leads the team with 46 kills, while Hannah Sigala follows behind with 30 kills and an impressive .490 hitting percentage. Bailey Nichol has dished 101 of the Eagles' 123 assists, while Courtney Smith has registered a team-best 31 digs. Saturday's match will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Morehead State.
Following this weekend's Crosstown Invite, Lehigh will host Villanova Tuesday night at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall before heading to the Art Carmichael Invite at Rhode Island next weekend.
