
Mountain Hawks continue tournament play in Rhode Island this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team returns to action Friday and Saturday when the Mountain Hawks head to Rhode Island's Art Carmichael Invite. Lehigh begins tournament action Friday at 11 a.m. against Sacred Heart before taking on host Rhode Island Friday at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks close out the weekend against Canisius at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Lehigh will be looking to bounce back from a straight-set loss to Villanova Tuesday that snapped the Mountain Hawks' four-match win streak. Lehigh claimed the Crosstown Invitational title last weekend after going 4-0 with straight-set wins over Saint Peter's, Marist and Fairleigh Dickinson and a 3-1 victory over Morehead State. The Mountain Hawks enter this weekend's tournament with a 5-3 overall record and Lehigh is 1-2 in games played away from the friendly confines of Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League in assists per set (12.50), kills per set (13.69) and digs per set (16.31). Lehigh ranks within the top three in the league in nearly every other statistical measure. Senior Ana Vrhel has stuffed a league-leading 1.44 blocks per set and also holds the second best hitting percentage in the league with a clip of .382. Vrhel has earned All-Tournament recognition in both of Lehigh's tournaments so far this season. Senior Stephanie Slater leads the team with 73 kills, while classmate Leah Turner and sophomore Whitney Krantz follow with 71 apiece. Senior Amy Matula has dished a team-best 183 assists, while junior Mariah Brantley leads the squad with 108 digs.
Sacred Heart is 2-3 on the young season with after claiming victories against Providence (3-1) and Hartford (3-2) and dropping matches to South Alabama (3-2), Boston College (3-1) and Brown (3-0). The Pioneers offense is led by Sarah Krufka's 74 kills and Katie Direnzo leads the squad with a .448 hitting percentage. Kiki Robinson leads the team with 203 assists and Ana Gonzalez has registered a team-best 47 digs. The Mountain Hawks are 1-1 all-time against Sacred Heart and the two programs haven't met since 2002.
Rhode Island carries a 3-3 record into its home tournament and will face Canisius before Friday's primetime match against Lehigh. The Rams have emerged victorious against UConn (3-1), Hartford (3-0) and UC Santa Barbara (3-2) and have dropped matches to Syracuse (3-0), Yale (3-1) and Rice (3-2). Franki Darnold leads the team with 70 kills, followed by Layne Self with 62 kills and a .302 attack percentage. Callan Kinnan has registered a squad-high 186 assists, while Audrey Castro leads the team with 71 digs. Lehigh and Rhode Island have met once before in 2013 and the Mountain Hawks were able to pull out a 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-19) victory inside Leeman-Turner Arena.
Canisius heads to the Art Carmichael Invite with a 1-7 record with its lone win coming in the form of a straight-set victory over fellow Patriot League team Loyola. Katlyn Tyler has secured a team-best 102 kills, while Lauren Siebert leads the squad with a .262 attack percentage. Grace Streicher leads the team in assists (196) and digs (78). The Mountain Hawks are 4-1 all-time against the Griffs and claimed a 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 24-26, 15-9) win in the last meeting between the two teams a season ago.
Following this weekend's tournament, Lehigh will head to Pittsburgh to compete in the Panther Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
