LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Lehigh field hockey team trailed by just one heading into the final ten minutes looking to pull even, but Rider scored two goals in the final 7:06 to pull away from the Mountain Hawks, 3-0 on Friday. Junior Julia Ward was stellar for Lehigh, making 13 saves in the cage while classmate Marissa Glatt led the offense with a pair of shots on goal.
Â
"The surface (field turf) gave us some trouble today," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "The score didn't reflect the game. The team gave a very strong effort. We need to tweak a few things and we look forward to playing on Sunday."
Â
Lehigh created the first penalty corner and shot of the game as junior Gabby Tofig fired a shot which was blocked 8:53 into the contest. Rider responded with the game's first shot on goal at 10:39, which Ward stopped. Ward stopped the first two shots sent her way before the Broncs converted the game's first goal at 12:09 via a penalty stroke.
Â
The scored remained the same for most of the middle stages of the game, but it wasn't for a lack of opportunities. Glatt fired her first shot on goal at 27:03 while junior Amanda Granger had a shot on goal at 33:36, which ended in a Rider defensive save. While Lehigh was looking for the equalizer, Ward was outstanding, finishing with seven first-half stops.
Â
Ward continued her outstanding play, tallying six second-half stops. Glatt fired a shot on goal at 48:06, but couldn't find the back of the cage. Rider added late goals at 62:54 and 68:29, both off penalty corners, to account for the 3-0 final.
Â
Rider finished with a 19-7 edge in shots and 14-8 advantage in penalty corners. Ward's 13 saves came across Joelle Prettyman who made two.
Â
Lehigh will look to bounce back when the squad hosts Davidson on Sunday at 12 p.m.
