BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a warm, sunny Saturday morning at Goodman Stadium the Lehigh football team held its annual Brown and White spring game. The Mountain Hawks ran approximately 50 plays of 11-on-11 scrimmaging with some 7-on-7 work mixed in to keep the offensive line fresh.

At the end of the workout the offense (white) held a 31-20 advantage thanks to a pair of long touchdown passes but more importantly, the Mountain Hawks got in two solid hours of work with their spring practice segment winding down.

"I was really pleased with how things went today," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "There was great competition. I saw a lot of good and a lot of bad, which I knew would be the case but we finally have a lot of film to sit down and watch."

After stretching and positional drills the Mountain Hawks split their squad for an open field tackling drill between backs, receivers, linebackers and defensive backs while the offensive and defensive lines ran a pass rush drill.

Rising sophomores Matt Timochenko and Brendan Craven alternated reps at quarterback. The Lehigh offense scored three touchdowns in the full 11-on-11 scrimmage.

Craven's first series at the helm resulted in the first touchdown. A 15 yard scramble by Craven on 3rd-and-4 brought the ball inside the five yard line. Four plays later senior DJ Kee rushed around right end for a 1-yard touchdown.

The defense stepped up on Timochenko's second series. Junior outside linebacker Joe Barrett came up with a pass breakup and then sacked Timochenko to set up third and long which ended up with the offense coming up two yards short on a fourth down pass from Timochenko to junior Jarrod Howard.

Craven started quickly on his second series firing a 50-yard touchdown strike to junior Michael Anderson, who out-battled senior Olivier Rigaud. With the ball back at the 50 the offense then methodically moved the ball down field but was unable to score after junior Jimmy Mitchell was credited with a sack of Craven on 4th-and-goal.

Timochenko also delivered a touchdown strike on the first play of a series. On his final series of plays, Timochenko opened with a 35-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Sasha Kelsey, who was wide open down the left side on a fake screen play.

In the final series of the scrimmage, Craven moved the offense from the 25 to the 12 before the defense stepped up, keyed by a 3rd-and-10 sack from senior Cody Kondas.

In the full team periods, Timochenko was 6-of-10 for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Craven was 5-for-12 for 81 yards and a touchdown. Craven was also sacked four times as Coen allowed his two quarterbacks to go live.

"The quarterbacks both did good things at times," Coen said. "We've got to be a little better decision makers."

Kondas led the defensive effort with seven tackles and a sack, while junior safety Brian Githens added four tackles. Senior D.J. Bourgeois had Lehigh's fourth sack.

"Now we can coach off this, which we haven't been able to do in a live situation," Coen said. "I thought the defensive guys flew around. We had good pressure on the quarterbacks. Some of the changes we've made defensively have allowed us to be more of an attacking style defense and I definitely saw that today."

Sophomore Nana Amankwah-Ayeh was Lehigh's leading rusher with 32 yards on six carries. Kee gained 17 on seven rushes, while junior Evan Kauffman rushed four times for eight yards.

Anderson led the receiving corps with three catches for 66 yards, while Kelsey added 37 yards on two receptions. Junior Trevor Socarras also had two catches, for 14 yards.

Rising senior linebacker Noah Robb was awarded the Jim Gum Scholarship Award, which is presented in memory of former Lehigh football player James S. Gum '84. Robb recorded one tackle in Saturday's game and added an interception in 7-on-7 pass skeleton drills.

Saturday's Brown and White game marked the 12th of Lehigh's 15 allotted spring practices. The Mountain Hawks will have their final three spring practices in the coming week.
