Mountain Hawks wrap up non-league play at Hampton Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to get back on track Sunday when the Mountain Hawks head to Hampton for the final non-league game of the season. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and audio coverage will be available on 91.3 WLVR FM and wlvr.org.

The Mountain Hawks have dropped four straight after starting the season 6-0. Lehigh is coming off a tough 61-60 overtime loss at Rider Thursday night in the first game following an 11-day break for final exams. The Mountain Hawks overcame a slow start and halftime deficit to take a six-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the Broncs rallied to force overtime before scoring the only field goal of the extra frame to capture a 61-60 victory.

Senior Kerry Kinek led Lehigh with 18 points and sophomore Quinci Mann followed with 17, 15 of which came in the second half. Senior Elizabeth Sharlow chipped in 12 points. Junior Lexi Martins pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Lehigh finished the game shooting 36.6 percent (26-for-71) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from three-point range and just 3-for-8 from the free throw line. The Broncs show 35 percent (21-for-60) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from downtown and 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the charity stripe. Rider held a 47-42 rebound advantage, marking just the second time this season that Lehigh was outrebounded.

Hampton carries a 1-8 overall record into Sunday's game and will be playing just its third home game of the season when Lehigh visits. The Lady Pirates have faced tough competition so far this season and were able to pick up their first win on Dec. 7 at Morgan State with a 65-51 victory. In its most recent action, Hampton dropped an 86-48 decision at No. 2 South Carolina.

The Lady Pirates have been outscored by an average of 20.7 points per game and outrebounded by a mark of 11.6 boards per contest. Hampton is shooting 34.6 percent from the field, 23.8 percent from three-point range and 62.4 percent from the charity stripe. Malia Tate-DeFreitas leads Hampton with 18.2 points per game and 18 made three-pointers. Kaylah Lupoe follows with 10.2 points per game and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per contest. Chanel Green has dished a squad-high 21 assists.Â

Sunday's game will be just the second-ever meeting between Lehigh and Hampton. The Lady Pirates visited Stabler Arena a season ago on Lehigh's Education Day. Lehigh trailed Hampton 55-52 with 11:40 to play before a three-pointer from Kayla Burton sparked a 24-3 Lehigh run that spanned nine minutes as the Mountain Hawks pulled away from the Lady Pirates, 85-67.

Kinek enjoyed a monster game with a season-best 22 points and 19 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. Twelve of Kinek's points came from the charity stripe, just one free throw shy of tying Lehigh's single-game record. Lexi Martins followed with 15 points, eight rebounds and a team-best five assists. Burton totaled a season-best 13 points to go along with a trio of rebounds and assists.

Lehigh converted 69.8 percent (30-for-43) of its free throws, 22 of which came in the second half. The Mountain Hawks held Hampton to a 30.5 percent (25-for-82) mark from the field and 28.6 percent (8-for-28) clip from three-point range. Lehigh held a 50-35 rebound edge.

Following Sunday's non-league finale, Lehigh will open up Patriot League play on Dec. 30 at Army West Point.
