BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a brilliant performance in just his second career start, Lehigh freshman quarterback Brad Mayes was named the Patriot League's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, it was announced Monday. Mayes completed 81 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns as Lehigh built a 41-10 halftime lead and went on to defeat Holy Cross 51-38 on Saturday.

Starting in place of junior Nick Shafnisky, who saw limited action due to injury, Mayes completed 17-of-21 passes for 239 yards on Saturday. He connected with senior Derek Knott on a 61-yard touchdown on Lehigh's first play from scrimmage and closed the first half with touchdown passes of 43 yards to sophomore Gatlin Casey and 11 yards to junior Trevor Socarras. Mayes was an impressive 15-of-17 in the first half as Lehigh scored its most first half points since putting 49 up against Georgetown in 2002.

Mayes completed passes to nine different receivers on the afternoon and did not turn the ball over for the second straight week. In two consecutive starts, Mayes has completed 35-of-45 passes for 453 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

In six games this season, the Tampa, Fla., native has completed 62 percent of his passes for 738 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Mayes is the third Patriot League football player to be recognized as the league's offensive player and rookie of the week in the same week, joining Lafayette's Drew Reed (2013) and Fordham's Chase Edmonds (2014).

Mayes is Lehigh's first Offensive Player of the Week of the 2015 season and the third different freshman to be named Rookie of the Week, joining running backs Dominick Bragalone (three times) and Micco Brisker (one).

Also on Monday, sophomore safety Quentin Jones garnered honorable mention recognition from the league. Jones had three tackles and a pair of interceptions Saturday against Holy Cross, as he became the first Lehigh player with two interceptions in one game since Bryan Andrews picked off a pair of passes versus Georgetown in 2011. He has 32 tackles this season and leads the Mountain Hawks with three interceptions.

The Mountain Hawks will visit Colgate Saturday for a key Patriot League showdown. Lehigh needs to win its final two games to earn at least a share of the Patriot League championship. Saturday's game kicks off just after 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network as well as ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320. Lehigh's pregame radio coverage will begin at noon from Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y.
