Mountain Hawks travel to first-place American Friday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will hit the road for its final regular-season away match Friday when the Mountain Hawks head to first-place American for a big Patriot League battle. With the Patriot League Tournament field of four already set, the Mountain Hawks will be looking to improve their seed heading into the postseason. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh carries a 17-11 overall record and 9-4 mark in league play into Friday's match. The Mountain Hawks earned wins over Bucknell (3-0) and Colgate (3-1) last weekend to help secure a postseason berth. Lehigh currently sits in third place in the Patriot League standings, while American (13-0) and Army West Point (10-2) hold down the top two spots and Colgate (8-5) sits in fourth place.
Senior Leah Turner leads the Lehigh offense with 344 kills, while classmate Stephanie Slater follows with 282. Senior Ana Vrhel has tallied 229 kills, a .300 hitting percentage and team high marks in both blocks (107) and service aces (36). Senior Amy Matula has dished a team-best 757 assists and junior Mariah Brantley has registered a squad-high 338 digs. The Mountain Hawks have hit .233 as a team while limiting their opponents to an attack percentage of .214.
The two-time defending Patriot League Champion Eagles are 22-6 overall and undefeated in Patriot League play with a perfect 13-0 record. American has won its last five matches and 14 of its last 15. Ten of the Eagles' 13 league victories have been straight-set sweeps. American picked up a 3-0 win at Holy Cross and 3-1 victory at Army West Point last weekend in the Eagles' most recent action.
Allison Cappellino leads American with 305 kills, while Kristyna Lindovska follows with 228. Defending Patriot League Player of the Year Monika Smidova leads the team with 878 assists to go along with a team-best .348 hitting percentage. Hoakalei Dawson leads the team with 360 digs. The Eagles have hit .266 as a team this season compared to their opponents' average of .153.
The Eagles were able to capture a 3-0 (25-17, 29-27, 25-20) victory over the Mountain Hawks in the season's first meeting inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Oct. 10. Turner led Lehigh with 19 kills, while Slater followed with 13. Three Eagles tallied double-digit kills to lead an American squad that hit .323 for the match compared to Lehigh's .190 hitting percentage.
Following Friday's match, the Mountain Hawks will return home to host Holy Cross and Army West Point next weekend in the final matches of the regular season. Friday's 7 p.m. match against Holy Cross will be Lehigh's Dig Pink night, while Saturday's 4 p.m. contest against Army West Point will serve as Senior Day.
