
Lehigh hosts two-time defending champ American Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team hosts two-time defending Patriot League champion and preseason favorite American in a crucial league battle Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since last year's Patriot League Championship match. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh enters Saturday's contest on a four-match win streak. The Mountain Hawks are 4-1 in Patriot League play, good for second place in the league standings, and 11-8 overall. Lehigh battled for a 3-2 victory at Bucknell last Friday before earning a convincing straight-set win over Colgate Saturday. Senior Leah Turner led the way last weekend with a pair of double-doubles, averaging 5.88 kills and 4.50 digs per set. Turner earned Patriot League Player of the Week recognition for her efforts.
The Mountain Hawks lead the league with an average of 13.49 kills per set. Lehigh has averaged a .234 hitting percentage throughout the season, but has hit .277 in its five league matches. Turner leads the team with 231 kills and is followed by seniors Stephanie Slater (194) and Ana Vrhel (157). Senior Amy Matula has dished a team-best 514 assists, while junior Mariah Brantley leads the squad with 247 digs.
American is currently 5-0 in the Patriot League and 13-5 overall. The Eagles will head to Colgate Friday evening before making the trip to Bethlehem Saturday. American leads the league in both hitting percentage (.266) and opponent hitting percentage (.159). The Eagles have cruised to straight-set wins over Lafayette, Bucknell, Army West Point, Holy Cross and Navy en route to their undefeated start to league play.
Allison Cappellino leads the Eagles with 178 kills and is followed by Kristyna Lindovska with 142. Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Monika Smidova has dished a team-best 550 assists, while Hoakalei Dawson leads the squad with 203 digs.
Lehigh was able to hand American its lone league loss (3-2) of the 2014 season when the Eagles visited Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in the final regular-season match last year. American earned its second-straight league title on Nov. 23, 2014 when the Eagles beat Lehigh 3-0 in Washington, D.C. American leads the all-time series 29-5.
Following Saturday's match, the Mountain Hawks kick off a lengthy seven-match road trip Tuesday against non-league foe Fordham before heading to Army West Point and Holy Cross next weekend.
