
Mountain Hawks earn 3-2 win in Friday night battle at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team battled for a hard-fought 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6) at Bucknell Friday evening in the Mountain Hawks' first away league match of the season. Lehigh moves to 3-1 in the Patriot League and 10-8 overall with the win, while the Bison fall to 1-3 in league play and 7-7 overall.
Senior Leah Turner led Lehigh with a career-high 25 kills and 19 digs to go along with a .305 hitting percentage. Senior Stephanie Slater followed with 18 kills, while sophomore Whitney Krantz chipped in ten. Senior Amy Matula dished a team-best 48 assists. Junior Mariah Brantley registered 18 digs, while freshman Emily Develle tallied 17. The Mountain Hawks hit .249 as a team and limited Bucknell to a clip of .209.
The Bison held an early 9-8 lead in the first set until senior Ana Vrhel smacked a kill that she followed with two service aces to spark a 9-2 Mountain Hawk run as Lehigh quickly jumped ahead 17-11. A kill from Krantz extended the Mountain Hawk lead to seven at 22-15, but Bucknell was able to pull within four thanks to a 4-1 run that spliced Lehigh's lead to 23-19. Back-to-back kills from Turner closed out the set as the Mountain Hawks earned a 25-19 victory.
Lehigh got out to a quick 8-6 lead in the second set, but Bucknell battled back with a 6-1 run to jump ahead 12-9. The Mountain Hawks rattled off the net three points to knot the score at 12, the first of five tie scores. Bucknell broke a 17-17 tie with a 3-0 streak to jump ahead 20-17 and force a Lehigh timeout. The Mountain Hawks pulled back within one on several occasions, but a Bison block eventually put the set away 25-23 to tie the match at one.
The Mountain Hawks broke a 3-3 tie early in the third set with a 7-1 run that was capped off by back-to-back Turner service aces to give Lehigh a 10-4 advantage. The closest the Bison would get the rest of the way was within five at 16-10 and the Mountain Hawks closed the set on a 9-4 run to earn a 25-14 set-three victory and 2-1 match lead.
The Bison came out with a vengeance in the fourth set to take a quick 13-3 lead. Three kills from Turner helped the Mountain Hawks string together six unanswered points and cut Bucknell's advantage to 13-9. Lehigh slowly chipped away at the Bison lead and was eventually able to tie the score at 21. The Bison responded by scoring four of the next five points, capped off by back-to-back kills from Hailey Stout, to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 set-four victory.
The Mountain Hawks recorded the first two points of the fifth and decisive set, but Bucknell tallied the next three to points to force an early Lehigh timeout. Kills from Krantz and Matula were followed by a service ace from Develle as the Mountain Hawks reclaimed the lead at 5-3. Lehigh remained in control from there and eventually closed the set on a 6-0 streak to capture a 15-6 set-five win and 3-2 match victory.
The Mountain Hawks return home Saturday to host Colgate at 4 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
