Mountain Hawks face tough tests at Army West Point and Holy Cross this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team hits the road to wrap up the first half of Patriot League play this weekend when the Mountain Hawks take on Army West Point at 7 p.m. Friday before traveling to Holy Cross at 5 p.m. Saturday. Free video of both matches will be available on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh enters this weekend's action with a 12-9 overall record and 4-2 mark in league play and the Mountain Hawks currently sit in third place in the Patriot League standings. Lehigh earned a straight-set win at Fordham in its final non-league match of the season Tuesday. Senior Ana Vrhel led the Mountain Hawk attack with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage to go along with five total blocks. Senior Leah Turner also chipped in 11 kills, while sophomore Kelly Bennett recorded eight kills with no errors in 11 attempts for an outstanding .727 hitting percentage. The Mountain Hawks fell to league-leading American last Saturday in Lehigh's most recent league action.
Turner leads the team with 261 kills, while senior Stephanie Slater follows with 215. Senior Amy Matula has dished a team-best 581 assists, while junior Mariah Brantley leads the squad with 282 digs. Vrhel has stuffed a team-best 80 total blocks to go along with a squad-high 32 service aces. The Mountain Hawks have hit .262 as a team in league play compared to their overall season mark of .233.
Army West Point currently holds down second place in the league standings with a 5-1 record that is part of a 13-6 overall mark. The Black Knights' only league loss came in the form of a straight-set decision at American. Since that loss, Army has earned 3-0 wins over Loyola and Lafayette and a 3-2 victory against Navy.
Carolyn Bockrath leads the Patriot League with a .436 hitting percentage and has tallied a team-best 210 kills. Vanessa Edwards sits atop the league leaderboard in assists per set with a mark of 10.17, while Shannel Chong has registered a league-leading 4.58 digs per set. Army has hit .239 as a team this season while limiting its opponents to a clip of .205.
Lehigh swept last year's series against Army, earning a 3-0 win inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall before battling for a 3-1 victory on the road. The Black Knights lead the all-time series 33-14.
Holy Cross carries a 2-4 league record and 5-13 overall mark into this weekend's action and will host Bucknell Friday before welcoming the Mountain Hawks Saturday. The Crusaders picked up their first two league wins last weekend when Holy Cross took down Navy (3-2) and Lafayette (3-0) at home. The weekend sweep helped the Crusaders grab both Patriot League weekly awards as Mandy Sifferlen earned Player of the Week honors and Lynsey Petersen secured Rookie of the Week laurels.
Sifferlen leads the Patriot League with 272 kills, good for an average of 3.83 per set. Petersen ranks second on the team with 187 kills. Katie McKernan has dished a team-best 328 assists, while M.C. Magner leads the squad with 233 digs. The Crusaders have hit .147 as a team this season compared to their opponents' average of .204.
The Mountain Hawks have won the last 14 matches against the Crusaders, including a 3-2 victory at Holy Cross and a 3-0 home win a season ago. Lehigh leads the all-time series 36-11.
Following the trip to Army and Holy Cross, Lehigh will head across town to face rival Lafayette Wednesday at 7 p.m.
