Mountain Hawks set for Patriot Invitational this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Looking to build upon a second-place finish at last weekend's Buffalo Invitational, the Lehigh volleyball team continues tournament play this weekend at George Mason's Patriot Invitational. The Mountain Hawks face host George Mason at 1 p.m. Friday before taking on Maryland at 5 p.m. Lehigh resumes play Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against William Mary followed by a 4 p.m. contest versus East Tennessee State.
Lehigh finished the Buffalo Invitational with a 2-2 record, good enough to earn runner-up status at the tournament. After dropping the season-opening contest to Siena 3-0, Lehigh bounced back in Friday's nightcap with a 3-0 sweep of host Buffalo. The Mountain Hawks fought to a 3-2 win over Canisius the next morning before dropping the finale 3-0 to SEC power Ole Miss.
Sophomores Taylor Carroll and Mariah Brantley were both named to the All-Tournament team. Brantley currently leads the Patriot League with a 5.29 digs per set average after tallying 74 digs over the weekend. Junior setter Amy Matula has recorded a league-best 9.93 assists per set so far this season. Senior Jade Van Streepen leads Lehigh with 39 kills, while freshman Kelly Bennett has stuffed a team-best 15 blocks.
George Mason heads into this weekend's tournament with an 0-3 record after dropping matches to Howard (3-1), Georgetown (3-1) and American (3-0) at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge last weekend. The Patriots finished last season with a 7-21 overall record that included a 3-11 A10 mark. Jessie Greenslade leads the team with 28 kills. Lehigh is 0-7 all-time against George Mason. This will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2007.
Maryland enters Friday match with a 3-0 record after earning the Elon Phoenix Classic title last weekend. The Terrapins, first-year members of the Big Ten, defeated Elon 3-1 before fighting to a 3-2 victory over Liberty. Maryland finished the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of San Jose State. The Terps finished last season with a 13-19 overall record and were predicted to finish 13th in the Big Ten this year season. Adreene Elliot leads the squad with 54 kills and is followed by Ashleigh Crutcher and Emily Fraik who have each tallied 27 apiece. Carlotta Oggioni has posted a team-best 123 assists. Lehigh and Maryland last met in 2008 and the Terps hold a 3-0 all-time advantage.
William and Mary enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-2 record. The Tribe opened their season with a 3-0 win over Iona Friday at the Penn State Classic before dropping a pair of straight-set matches to TCU and the host Nittany Lions. The team rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Hampton Tuesday night. Mallory Brickerd leads the Tribe with 36 kills, while Stephanie Paul has tallied a team-best 144 assists. Saturday's 10 a.m. contest will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and William and Mary.
The Mountain Hawks close out the Patriot Invitational at 4 p.m. Saturday against an East Tennessee State team that enters the weekend with a 1-2 record. The Buccaneers began their season-opening weekend at the Charlotte Invitational with a straight-set win over Morgan State before dropping a pair of 3-1 decisions to Sacramento State and UNC Charlotte. Ashleigh Shain was named to the Charlotte Invitational All-Tournament Team after tallying 11 digs and three service aces in the three matches combined. Bethany Gesell and Khadijah Wiley have both tallied a team-best 20 digs. Saturday's meeting will be the first between Lehigh and the Buccaneers.
Following the Patriot Invitational, the Mountain Hawks remain on the road to face Villanova Tuesday at 7 p.m. Lehigh makes its home debut on Sept. 12-13 when the Mountain Hawks host the Crosstown Invitational.
