Freshmen sprinters lead Lehigh on day two of Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshmen sprinters Kaitlyn Ruffing and Jamal Willis posted individual second place finishes to lead the Lehigh swimming and diving team on day two of the Patriot League Championships Thursday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. School records were set in six of the nine events Thursday including all four women's events. The Mountain Hawk women moved into sixth place after two days of competition, while the men remain in fifth.

Ruffing broke teammate Carolyn Koch's school record in the 50 yard freestyle in the morning preliminary session, then broke her own record at night to finish second in the event. Ruffing took half a second off Koch's record time of 23.66 by swimming 23.16 in the morning. In the finals, Ruffing clocked in at 23 seconds flat to finish just .02 behind Patriot League Champion Molly Mucciarone of Army. Koch also established a personal best with a time of 23.64 in the preliminaries but had to settle for a spot in the B Final, where she finished 12th overall with a time of 23.79 seconds.

Sophomore Courtney Patterson opened the morning session by breaking her own school record in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.38. In the finals, Patterson finished with a time of 4:55.43 to finish in eight place. Freshman Cora Summerfield finished sixth in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.24.

In the 200 yard individual medley freshman Kelly Carroll broke Linda Hendrixson's ten year old school record, clocking in at 2:05.70 to finish third in the B Final and 11th overall.

In the final women's event Thursday night, Koch, Carroll and Ruffing teamed with sophomore Rebekah Campo to smash the school record by 3.5 seconds as they finished in 1:33.88 to grab third place.

Lehigh is up to 116 points, 21 behind fifth place Colgate and 17 ahead of seventh place Loyola. Navy continues to lead the women's standings with 260 points, 49 more than Boston University.

On the men's side, freshman Jacob Moyar broke a 19 year old school record to co-headline the men's effot. Moyar finished seventh overall in the 500 yard freestyle but his time of 4:28.89 was just over a second more than the previous record, which was set by Jeff Cline in 1995.

Moyar's record was the second of two set by the Lehigh men on Thursday. Willis tied Demetri Karedis' school mark in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.19 seconds in the morning preliminary round. Willis finished second in Thursday night's finals with a time of 20.22. Senior Chris Hoke also reached the A Final in the 50 free and finished fifth with a time of 20.42.

In addition to Moyar's success in the 500 free, juniors Danny Bennett and Eric Sherwood reached the B Final. Sherwood clocked in at 4:37.41 to finish 14th, while Bennett finished 16th with a time of 4:41.53.

In the 200 IM junior Jake Greene won the B Final with a time of 1:51.57.

Lehigh's 200 free relay put forth a strong effort but was not able to defend its title from a year ago. Willis and Hoke teamed with junior Martin Kendig and freshman Justin White to finish third in 1:21.12.

Junior Dan Bateman added four points to Lehigh's cause, finishing 13th in the three meter event with a score of 219.95.

As a team, Lehigh remains in fifth place with 148 points. The Mountain Hawks trail fourth place Bucknell by 26 points. Navy continues to lead the field with 356.5 points, nearly 150 more than second place Boston University.

The four-day Patriot League Championships continue Friday at Navy's Lejeune Hall, with preliminaries set for 10:30 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m. All the action will be streamed live via the Patriot League Network.
