Lehigh explodes for 15 goals in two games this weekend

The Mountain Hawks went into this past weekends contests against Temple and Penn State Berks just looking to compete. Â This was expressed by a large portion of the players and coaching staff. Â What happened in these games was something magical. Â They not only competed, but dominated their opponets, combining for an overwhelming 15 goals in those two nights. Â Temple University was the unfortuneate victim Friday night as they visited Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem for Lehigh's first home game of the 2014-2015 season. Â It didn't take long at all for the Mountain Hawks to light the lamp, as Justin Uzcategui was the first to do so off a nice assist from Stephen Flego at 6:31 of the first period. Â Garren Fritts and Kevin Mcgee were the next to score for Lehigh at the 10:14 and 12:59 marks of the 2nd period. Â It was Kevin McGee who would start off the scoring in the 3rd period for Lehigh, netting his 2nd goal of the night at the 6:14 mark. Â Lehigh did not want to wait long to put Temple away as they again scored 30 seconds later off Henry Brooks 1st goal of the night at the 6:44 mark of period 3. Â It was Chris Ramondelli who added to the Mountain Hawks goal total at the 10:52 mark. Â This would be the first of 5 goals that "Cram" would put past opposing goalies this weekend. Â Henry Brooks would add insult to injury by adding his 2nd goal of the night, an unassisted empty net goal at the 19:02 mark, putting the nail in Temple's coffin with a decisive 7-4 victory. Saturday, Lehigh was looking for their 2nd victory of the weekend, as they travelled to Wyomissing PA to take on the Blue Lions of Penn State Berks. Â The Mountain Hawks were riding high on the previous nights win and were definitely not done with the high abundance of scoring as was shown the night before. Â It was 4:40 into the 1st period, when Evan Goldstein snuck one past Blue Lions goalie Justin Gulia, beautifully assisted by Spencer Lehrer and Justin Uzcategui. Â Lehigh went up 2-0 after Evan Goldstein scored his 2nd goal of the night at 9:33 of the 1st period. Â The score was 2-1 going into the 1st intermission. Â Coach Tom Laessig was happy with how the men looked in the 1st period and commended the team in the locker room on their teamwork but cautioned them to not let up. Â This was apparently a message that was heard loud and clear, as was shown in the next 2 periods. Â Lehigh began their scoring barrage at 4:36 when it was Chris Ramondelli firing one into the back of the net, assisted by Kevin McGee and Garren Fritts. Â Freshman Stephen Flego was next, putting one past the Blue Lions goaltender, off Spencer Lehrer's 2nd assist of the night at 7:01. Â Chris Ramondelli scored a late goal, at the 19:53 mark, which was assisted by Evan Goldstein. Â This gave Lehigh a 5-2 advantage going into the 2nd intermission. Â What the Mountain Hawks did next showed that they are aiming to be a legitimate foe for teams in the ACHA this season, coming out adding 3 more goals in the 3rd period. Â First was Chris Ramondelli, completing one of two Mountain Hawk hat tricks of the night, at the :46 mark, with assists going to Garren Fritts and Adam Goldstein. Â Evan Goldstein was eager to get his own hat trick, as was shown after he snuck one past the Penn State Berks goalie at 1:04 of the 3rd. Â The Blue Lions were able to come back a bit, putting 3 pucks past Lehigh goalie Paul Sjostrom at the 3:20, 4:00, and 11:52 marks. Â Chris Ramondelli added an amazing 4th goal of the night at the 11:27 mark off a dazzling Kevin McGee assist. Â The buzzer sounded, and the scoreboard read Lehigh 8 Penn State Berks 5. Â
The winning weekend, and high scoring was something that Chris Ramondelli and Evan Goldstein both attributed to Lehigh's positive attitude and great teamwork, which is obviously something that is coming together. Â "I think the outburst of scoring in both games this weekend really shows how much the chemistry between my line mates and the whole team is progressing. Â We're starting to play better as a whole unit and last night we were really clicking. Â Scoring is always great, especially when it comes in bunches, but it's impossible without the hard work of the other guys on the ice" Evan Goldstein told me tonight. Â The improvement in team chemistry is something that Chris Ramondelli also touched on tonight as he told me "both games this weekend showed that our team chemistry has improved alot in the past few games. Â Things are starting to click for us right now and it feels really good to get two big wins over the weekend".
