Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Easton on Saturday to participate in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. The men's team is in search of its 15th straight win over the Leopards, while the women look to triumph for the ninth consecutive time. The men's 8k start at 10 a.m. and the women's 6k will commence at 10:45 a.m.
"To us, the rivalry means competition at its purest," said men's head coach Todd Etters. "It's head-to-head competition at its best."
The men's team won last year's dual meet 16-47, while the women raced to a 17-46 victory. Both teams placed nine runners in the top 10. Current Lehigh senior Tyler Mueller came in first place in the men's race with a time of 24:54. The men will also return eight of last year's top ten finishers. Lehigh's top woman finisher was returning senior Hannah Pierce who crossed the line in second place with a time of 22:46. The women return six of last year's top ten finishers.
Both Lehigh teams are coming off impressive first place victories in the 2013 Lehigh Invitational, which served as the season-opening competition. Senior Ryan Mahalsky captured the first place finish on the men's side, while senior Rosie Roessel was the women's top finisher in fourth place. Eight Mountain Hawk men and seven Lehigh women finished within the top 20 of their respective Lehigh Invitational races.
The Lafayette women finished third in the Lehigh Invitational, while the Leopard men came in eighth. Rose Willey crossed the line in first place in the women's race. Two Lafayette women finished within the top 20, while two Leopard men finished in the top 50.
This will be the first meet for both Lehigh and Lafayette since the season-opening Lehigh Invitational. This Saturday's dual meet will serve as a course preview for the Patriot League Championships. The league championship race will be run on Lafayette's course on November 2.
"After the meet we will sit down and talk about the course and what it felt like to race on it," said Lehigh women's head coach Debbie Utesch. "We'll be reviewing some of the strategic points of the course after this competition as we prepare for the Patriot League Championships in November."
Following the Lehigh-Lafayette dual on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks will return to action when they host the 40th annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports. The competition will feature a full day of collegiate and high school races beginning at 10 a.m. on October 5.
