BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team tied the score at the 62:36 mark, but the Stags answered with the game-winner less than four minutes later to down the Mountain Hawks 2-1 in the season opener for both sides. Sophomore Lindsey Schott scored Lehigh's goal on a nifty cross from classmate Erin Ricker while freshman goalie Julia Ward made eight saves in her collegiate debut.
Â
"I think it was a good first game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "We've been working on skills during preseason. It was nice to see some people execute them. If we can tweak some things, I think it'll be a good season."
Â
Fairfield controlled play in the first half and Felicitas Heinen converted that into a goal for the Stags to make it 1-0 at 30:53. She beat Ward off a direct shot from a penalty corner.
Â
The Mountain Hawks began to earn some quality scoring chances in the second half. Freshman Gabby Tofig picked up Lehigh's first shot on goal at 44:44 and Lehigh kept the momentum going. That momentum turned into the tying goal at 62:36 when Ricker made the feed across to Schott. The sophomore finished the beautiful goal past Caitlin Bennett to even the score at one.
Â
However, the Stags answered at 66:25 when Kaitlyn Taddeo was sprung in all alone on cage. Ward came out to challenge to no avail as Fairfield took a 2-1 lead which proved to be the final.
Â
Final shots were 17-9 in favor of the Stags while penalty corners were 14-7 Fairfield. Ward finished with eight saves across Bennett who made four.
Â
"Julia stepped in as a freshman," said Blue. "That's a hard job, but she was ready. I'm proud of her. She showcased a little bit of what she could do today."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) to face the Red Flash. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
Â
"Intensity is good; we just need to keep possession," said Blue. "We're looking for the W as always. We have to take it one game at a time."
