Lehigh faces American in Patriot League semifinal Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Lehigh volleyball team will head to Washington, D.C. to take on No. 1 American in the first semifinal of the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of the contest will earn a spot in the championship match on Sunday and each tournament game can be viewed on the Patriot League Network.
Saturday's semifinal will be Lehigh's third-straight appearance in the Patriot League Tournament and fourth in the past five years. The Mountain Hawks aim to capture their third-ever Patriot League Championship and first since 1997, while vying for their first championship match appearance since 2002.
Saturday's 2 p.m. match featuring Lehigh and American will be followed by a 5 p.m. match between No. 2 Colgate and No. 3 Army to decide the final championship contender. The championship match will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. in American's Bender Arena.
Lehigh finished the regular season with a 20-8 record, which marks the first time in 11 years that the Mountain Hawks have captured 20 wins in a season. The 2002 squad finished 21-13 overall and 10-4 in the Patriot League. That team made it to the Patriot League Championship, but dropped the final match to American, 3-1.
American claimed the Patriot League regular season title with a 15-1 league record and 30-2 overall mark to be awarded the top seed.
Saturday's meeting will be the third of the season between the Eagles and the Mountain Hawks, with American claiming a pair of 3-1 wins during the regular season. The Mountain Hawks grabbed the first set in each contest, but American rallied to win the following three.
Lehigh ranks second in the nation in service aces per set, averaging 1.90, and has used the serve as a weapon all season. Senior libero Rachel Charles ranks 14th in the nation with an average of 0.46 aces per set. Charles is also third in the Patriot League in digs per set, averaging 4.57, which led her to be named the Patriot League Libero of the Year for the third straight year.
American leads the league in kills per set and assists per set, averaging 14.17 and 12.76, respectively, while Lehigh is right behind in second place with 13.13 and 12.44. The Eagles have tallied a league-leading 2.48 blocks per set average and a .298 hitting percentage this season.
Junior Jade Van Streepen leads Lehigh in kills and ranks fourth in the Patriot League with an average of 3.23 per set. Her impressive statistics recently helped her to Second Team All-Patriot League recognition and she was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League squad. Junior Kaylynn Genemaras is second on the team with 240 kills, followed by senior Courtney McCutchan with 175. Sophomore Amy Matula has tallied a team-leading 950 assists, while also recording the second-highest service ace total with 29.
The Eagles are led by Kelly McCaddin, who has tallied a team and league-leading .419 hitting percentage throughout the season. Morgan Hendrix sits second with a .350 clip. McCaddin and Hendrix each earned Second Team All-Patriot League recognition. The Eagles are also home to three First Team selections in Monika Smidova, Kristyna Lindovska and Juliana Crum. Smidova also earned Patriot League Setter of the Year thanks to her league-leading 10.66 assists per set average.
