Tournament-bound Mountain Hawks head to American Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- After clinching a postseason berth last weekend, the Lehigh volleyball team will head to Washington, D.C., on Friday night for a 7 p.m. showdown at first-place American. The contest will be Lehigh's final match of the regular season, as the Mountain Hawks will look to gain momentum heading into the Patriot League Tournament.

Lehigh has won three matches in-a-row and seven of its last eight. The Mountain Hawks sit third in the Patriot League with an 11-4 mark and boast a 20-7 overall record. Lehigh clinched its third straight postseason berth after the Mountain Hawks beat Colgate and Army dropped a match to Loyola last Saturday.

In its most recent match, Lehigh snapped Colgate's nine-match winning streak, beating the Raiders Saturday in Hamilton, 3-0. The straight-set win was the first time Lehigh has ever beaten the Raiders in three sets.

 Junior Jade Van Streepen led the team against the Raiders with 11 kills, while junior Kaylynn Genemaras added eight. The duo has paced the offense all season, with Van Streepen leading the team at 275 kills and Genemaras close behind with 234. Senior Rachel Charles continues her strong senior campaign, notching 22 digs against Colgate to give her 395 on the year.

The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed success this season in part due to their serving ability. Lehigh ranks first in the nation in service aces, averaging 1.94 per set. Charles ranks 12th in the country, averaging 0.47 aces per set.

The Eagles have also clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, and currently sit in first place in the league. American continued to roll in its most recent match, picking up its 12th sweep in league action and tenth straight win with a 3-0 victory over Navy on Wednesday night.

Allison Cappellino led the charge against the Mids on Wednesday night, tallying 14 kills and an impressive .480 hitting percentage to help the Eagles to their 28th win of the season. Kristyna Lindovska leads the team with 334 kills on the season, while Monika Smidova has tallied a team-leading 935 assists.

American leads the all-time series against Lehigh 25-4. The teams last met earlier this season with the Eagle's winning the match 3-1. Lehigh claimed the first set, but American was able to rally and secure the following three.

Following Friday night's match, the Mountain Hawks will have a week to prepare for the Patriot League Tournament which begins on November 23.
