BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Mason Beckman has been selected to participate in the 48th annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, November 2 in Fairfax, Va., the NWCA announced Tuesday. Beckman will square off against A.J. Schopp of Edinboro in a battle of Pennsylvania natives in the 133 pound weight class.

Beckman qualified for the NCAA championships as a true freshman, compiling a 27-11 record and finishing fourth at the 2012 EIWA Championships at 133. He went 1-2 in his first NCAA championships appearance.

Last year, Beckman deferred his eligibility and enjoyed an outstanding season competing unattached in open tournaments. Beckman posted a 34-3 record with eight falls and was named Lehigh's deferred eligibility wrestler of the year. He won five open tournament titles and placed fourth at the prestigious Midlands Championships in late December.

A two-time Eastern Wrestling League champion, Schopp went 33-5 in 2012-13 and earned his first career All-America honor, placing fourth at 133. A junior from Tyrone, Pa., Schopp owns a 72-11 career record for the Fighting Scots. Schopp competed in last year's All-Star Classic, defeating Chris Dardanes of Minnesota 2-1.

Beckman and Schopp have yet to meet in college, but the two men have met on three previous occasions. In folkstyle, Beckman and Schopp split two matches at the King of the Mountain tournament during Beckman's freshman year at Reynolds High School. Beckman also owns a freestyle victory over Schopp at the 2012 ASICS University Freestyle Nationals.

Beckman's selection marks the second straight year a Lehigh wrestler will compete at the All-Star Classic. Last year, Robert Hamlin defeated Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota 5-3 at 184, kicking off a season that culminated with an appearance in the NCAA Finals. Prior to 2012, the last time Lehigh wrestlers competed in the All-Star Classic was 2004 when Cory Cooperman and Troy Letters competed. Cooperman dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Teyon Ware of Oklahoma, while Letters won a 3-2 decision over David Bolyard of Central Michigan.

Lehigh wrestlers own a 14-13 career record at the All-Star Classic. Mike Caruso was the first Lehigh wrestler to compete in the classic, defeating Jim Hanson of Colorado 6-3 in 1967/

The NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps will occur on November 2, 2012 at 7:15 p.m. at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster or via the link above.
