Mountain Hawks drop 2-1 double OT heartbreaker at Sacred Heart

SACRED HEART, Conn. - The Lehigh field hockey team held a 1-0 lead until midway through the second half, but Sacred Heart pulled even and scored the game-winner in double overtime to hand the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 loss on Friday evening. Senior Caitlyn Mitchell scored Lehigh's goal off a penalty stroke while freshman Julia Ward made eight saves in a strong effort between the pipes.

"We played like a team today from start to finish," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "I am proud of this team. It was anyone's game and although unfortunate we didn't walk away with the win, every line came to play tonight. Caitey had a great penalty stroke and Kassidy Green had amazing step-ups in the back. All in all, everyone on the field came to play."

A scoreless first half that saw only five combined shots turned wide open in a second half that featured 25 total shots. Mitchell started the scoring by breaking the scoreless tie at 37:05 off a penalty stroke.

Lehigh held onto the lead until 59:15 when Danielle Gallagher scored off a rebound to knot the score at one.

Neither team could score in the first 15-minute overtime period, with Lehigh holding a 5-1 edge in shots. The Pioneers went on to register the only two shots of the second overtime as Gallagher scored on the second to give Sacred Heart the 2-1 victory.

Final shots were 20-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 12-9 edge in penalty corners. Ward's eight saves came across Sacred Heart's Mary Altepeter who made 11.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Rider at 1 p.m. at Ulrich Field.
