Lehigh completes day one at Patriot League Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh men's and women's track field teams completed the first day at the Patriot League Championships Friday. The women's squad sits in second, just three points behind first while the men are in fourth. There were some stellar performances on both sides including three second-place finishes and a broken school record for the women while the men shined in the 10,000-meter run and the long jump. The final day will get underway Saturday at 11 a.m.
On the women's side, Lehigh earned 41 points right on the heels of Bucknell's 44 points while Lafayette sits close behind in third with 35 points. Navy is in fourth (28), Army fifth (24), Holy Cross sixth (10) and Colgate seventh (4).

The 4x800-meter relay team of Brittany Pietrosh, Lauren Pietrosh, Julia Perry and Jessica Kendzor ran a school record time of 8:46.32 to place third in the event. The time crushed the previous record of 8:54.33 which was set in 2008. The time was also the third-fastest in Patriot League history.
Alexandra Doersam placed second in the long jump with a distance of 5.63m, just 0.26 behind first to earn eight points for the Mountain Hawks. Doersam will race tomorrow in the 100-meter final as she sits in the fourth position. Doersam – along with Kristin Slotnick – will also represent Lehigh in the 200-meter final as the duo is fifth and sixth, respectively.
Lehigh earned 14 points in the hammer throw as E'Lana Lemon placed second with a personal record of 54.92m while Jimil Ataman finished right behind her with a distance of 53.77m.
In the 10,000-meter run, Lehigh earned nine points as Katherine Pierce placed second with a time of 36:43.92 while Victoria Berard was sixth (37:33.46).
Melissa Romero placed fifth in the javelin with a personal record of 39.85m while Jonelle Jerwick placed fifth in the pole vault with a distance of 3.55m.
Brooke Astor currently sits in first place in the heptathlon with 2,861 points heading into the final events tomorrow, just 57 points ahead of first. Astor won the 110m hurdles and 200m dash while placing fourth in the high jump and fifth in the shot put.
Astor also qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles along with Serenah Polite.
On the men's side, Lehigh finished the day with 18 points – nine coming from one event. Navy sits in first with 56 points while Army (49) and Colgate (32) are ahead of the Mountain Hawks. Colgate is fifth (10), Lafayette sixth (8) and American and Holy Cross (6) are tied for seventh.
Evans Kosgei placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:16.81, the second fastest time in Patriot League history. Tyler Mueller finished fifth in the event with a time of 30:40.75 for the fifth fastest time in league history. The duo combined to earn nine points in the event for the Mountain Hawks.
Steve Tutunjian scored six points for his third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.88m.
Benjamin Beauchamp had a great effort in the hammer throw, setting a personal record with a distance of 47.54m.

Lehigh also had a few qualify for finals tomorrow. Martin Otieno sits in third headed into the 100-meter final and will also be in the 200-meter final in fourth. Monroe also qualified for finals in the 200m final in eighth. Seth Robinson is currently in fifth position headed into the finals of the 110-meter hurdles.
In the decathlon - which will be completed tomorrow - lehigh has three in the top four. Alexander Maurer is in second with 3,462 points while Kyle Forrest (3,441) is in third and Ryan Paquin is in fourth (3,354).

The Lehigh women's squad will look to improve upon its third-place finish in the 2011 Outdoor Championships while the men will look finish above its fourth place spot last year.
