The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (1-2) fell to a visiting Bloomington Edge in their 2012 Home Opener, 57-39 after struggling in the first half. A second half flurry of points wasn't enough to bring the Steelhawks back.
The Edge (3-1), won their first away game this season and moved the ball methodically on their opening drive, resulting in an Andre Raymond 1 yard touchdown run. The Steelhawks responded with a Chris Hazley 38 yard field goal to cap the scoring in the first quarter.
For the Steelhawks, John Halman started the second quarter off with a 7 yard touchdown run, but that would be the only points the Steelhawks put up the rest of the half. Bloomington then went on an air attack, resulting in quarterback Dusty Burk throwing for three touchdowns.
The Steelhawks played a better second half and rallied in the third quarter, tallying 14 points on back to back plays. Making his debut in Lehigh Valley, quarterback Bryan Randall rushed for his first touchdown. This was followed by a Hazley kickoff that was fumbled in the end zone and recovered by Sam Maxwell for another Steelhawk touchdown. The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle between the teams with each scoring two touchdowns.
The Steelhawks will be back at home this Saturday, March 17th for their first of four games against the Reading Express this season. Kickoff is lined up for 7:05 p.m. (EST) and will be broadcast on Service Electric TV2 Sports, as will all home games for the 2012 season. The game will be presented by the McCann School of Business and will feature a Halftime Quarterback Challenge with local football players. In addition, the first 500 fans in the door will receive a McCann/Steelhawks mini football!
