BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior running back Zach Barket has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football second team, it was announced Thursday. A four-year letter winner, Barket let the Mountain Hawks in rushing in each of the last two seasons, and is also one of Lehigh's top performers in the classroom.
The Academic All-America teams are voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Last month Barket was recognized as Academic All-District for the second straight year.
On the field, the Schuylkill Haven, Pa. native rushed for 525 yards on 139 carries in 2012 and scored five touchdowns on the ground, while adding 110 yards on 18 receptions. Barket's best game this season was a 123-yard effort in Lehigh's 17-14 win at Georgetown on October 13. Barket enjoyed a career year in 2011, earning first team All-Patriot League honors after rushing for 706 yards and four touchdowns, while catching 33 passes for 329 yards and five scores.
Barket is the fifth Lehigh football player to earn Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA and the first since Nick Martucci was honored in 1998. Other CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the Brown and White include Jason Mack (1994), Rich Clark (1991) and Shon Harker (1990).
A key contributor on Lehigh's Patriot League Championship teams in 2010 and 2011; Barket's Lehigh teams amassed a record of 35-13, including a 31-6 mark over the last three seasons.
Lehigh posted its third consecutive ten-win season with a 10-1 campaign in 2012, highlighted by a fifth consecutive victory over rival Lafayette.
