GLADSTONE, N.J. – The Lehigh men's golf team grabbed the lead after the morning session, but Lafayette won four of seven singles matches in the afternoon to claim the President's Cup from the Mountain Hawks 7-6 Tuesday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. The Mountain Hawks needed 6.5 points to retain the cup, but Lafayette received singles wins from Ben Deforest and Chad Bell to win the cup from Lehigh.
The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style format. Play began in the morning with three better ball nine-hole doubles matches. Things started well for the Mountain Hawks, who claimed 2.5 of a possible three points in the morning. Sophomore Carlos Kim and senior Sean Keller teamed to defeat Deforest and Bell 3 and 1, while sophomore Zach Allinson and junior Alex DiClemente posted a 2 and 1 win over Mike Zausmer and Pat Luther.
The second nine holes in the morning featured doubles play with an alternate shot format. The Leopards picked up their first full point of the day as Deforest and Bell defeated Kim and Keller 2 up, while the teams halved the other two matches, giving Lehigh a 3.5-2.5 advantage at the halfway point.
Freshman Harley Abrams started singles play on the right foot for the Mountain Hawks, defeating Peter Gross 6 and 4, but the Leopards won four of the final six matches to claim the cup, after Lehigh won the inaugural event last year.
Abrams and Allinson were Lehigh's two singles winners as Allinson won 2 and 1 over Zausmer. Both players were unbeaten on the day.
Josh Feinberg won a point for Lafayette with a 6 and 5 win over junior Andrew Arnold, while freshman Jonathan Heydt and Luther halved their match to make the score 5-4 in favor of Lehigh. DiClemente lost 2 and 1 to David Kafafian, but after Allinson's win brought Lehigh to six points, Deforest won 5 and 4 over Keller and Bell downed Kim 1 up to claim the cup for the Leopards.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their fall season when they host the Lehigh Invitational October 20-21 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
