BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite a late flurry of shots, the Lehigh field hockey team couldn't bounce back from an early deficit, dropping a 2-0 final to Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks (1-5) had four penalty corners and seven shots in the game's final 12 minutes, but couldn't find a way to beat Stags' goalkeeper Caitlin O'Donnell. Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Saint Joseph's to take on the Hawks. Please note: the Saint Joseph's game will be played at Drexel University.
“I don't think we showed up to play today,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “Credit Fairfield, who took advantage.”
After an early Lehigh penalty corner, Fairfield took control in the first half, outshooting the Mountain Hawks, 13-0, with one of those attempts beating Lehigh goalkeeper Seirra Segear. Freshman Emily Hu also recorded two more defensive saves to up her season total to six, including one at 22:41 when she stopped Nikki McLucas who was staring at a wide-open cage. That helped keep the Mountain Hawks within one at the half.
Fairfield tacked onto its lead just over seven minutes into the second when Hilary Burns capitalized on a tough angle to make it 2-0.
Lehigh began to turn things around, earning a number of offensive possessions, but were unable to find the back of the cage. A good chance came with just over 10 minutes remaining when Tilton had two shots at the near post, but O'Donnell stood strong. The Mountain Hawks went on to fire three more shots on goal in the final minutes, but it wasn't enough.
The Mountain Hawks held a 12-8 shot advantage in the second half to pull within 21-12 in the game's final count. Penalty corners stood even at 10, eight of Lehigh's coming in the second half. Segear finished with five saves while O'Donnell posted six.
Lehigh heads to Saint Joseph's on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. showdown with the Hawks. The Mountain Hawks then head to Sacred Heart next weekend to face the Pioneers, then Maine, in a neutral site clash.
