BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Robert Hamlin has been named EIWA Wrestler of the Week, it was announced Monday. In his only bout of the week, Hamlin posted an impressive 8-3 decision over defending NCAA Champion Quentin Wright of Penn State in a rematch of last season's national finals at 184.
Hamlin defeated Wright 4-3 last year in a dual meet at Rec Hall, but Wright evened the score with a 5-2 victory in the NCAA finals, which capped Penn State's national team title.
Friday night in front of 5,584 at Stabler Arena, Hamlin took to the mat with his team down 24-3 but put constant pressure on the fifth-ranked Wright to emerge with the victory. Hamlin opened the scoring with a first period takedown, and later emerged from a scramble with a second takedown to lead 4-1 after one period. Wright escaped in the second period to cut Hamlin's lead to 4-2, but in the third period scored a quick reveral, and after a third Wright escape, fought his way out of a takedown attempt, before adding a third takedown of his own to make the final score 8-3.
Hamlin successfully defended his consensus No. 1 ranking for the third straight week, after posting his tenth straight win to open the season. The first wrestling All-American from the state of Vermont, Hamlin is the only unbeaten wrestler among Lehigh's starting lineup. He went 3-0 to capture the title at the UB Open in December and is a perfect 8-0 in dual meet competition this season. Hamlin owns a 60-15 career record including a 38-6 mark in dual meets.
Lehigh saw its five dual winning streak come to an end with a 24-12 loss to Penn State in the 100th meeting between the longtime rivals. The Mountain Hawks will return to action at the Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.
