Lehigh tops initial 2011-12 Presidents' Cup standings

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On the strength of a Patriot League Championship in football, Lehigh is out to an early lead in the initial Patriot League 2011-12 Presidents' Cup Standings, released Monday. Lehigh checks in with 33.5 points and also leads in the men's standings with 17.75 points. The Mountain Hawk women are tied for sixth in a close race with 15.75 points.
American sits in second place, one point behind the Mountain Hawks, followed by Colgate, Navy, Bucknell, Army, Lafayette and Holy Cross. The fall sports season includes football, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and men's and women's cross country. Six different schools won championships during the fall season
In the women's standings, Colgate is currently on top with 20 points, followed by Army with 18.5 points. The Mountain Hawks qualified for the Patriot League tournament in field hockey and volleyball and sit in a tie for sixth with Navy, behind Colgate, Army, American, Bucknell and Lafayette and ahead of Holy Cross.
Presidents' Cup points are based by a team's performance in the regular season and postseason. Lehigh has yet to capture the Presidents' Cup, but the Mountain Hawks have finished second twice and finished third in each of the last two seasons.
