Eng’s late goal gives Lehigh big 2-1 win over Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh junior forward Kim Eng scored off a penalty corner with just 13:34 remaining to give the Mountain Hawks a lead, and the defense did the rest, as it withheld a Colgate charge for a big 2-1 win on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Ulrich Field. Senior Abby Tilton scored Lehigh's first goal while sophomore Sierra Segear shined once again in the cage, making 11 saves to help the Mountain Hawks improve to 1-1 in Patriot League play.
“We played well together as a unit,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We played as a team; the effort was there for 70 minutes. We were great at forcing corners today and that led to both of our goals.”
The Mountain Hawks came out of the gate firing; after Colgate took the first shot of the game, Lehigh responded with eight in a row, one of which went in. After senior Caitlin Donnelly's initial shot off the penalty corner was blocked, the Mountain Hawks had two chances which Raiders' goalkeeper Amanda DiDomizio stopped before Donnelly eventually found Tilton on the same sequence. Tilton made it count, converting her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0, just 5:52 into the contest.
Colgate took over the end of the first half, firing a flurry of chances at Segear, including at 21:25 when Elianna Brown finished a centering past to even the score at one.
Segear came back with seven saves over the final 9:43 of the first half to keep Lehigh even after 35 minutes. That included a key stop on a Colgate penalty corner with no time remaining.
Lehigh turned it around in the second, holding a 9-4 shot advantage and 7-3 edge in corners. It paid off at 55:26 off a penalty corner when freshman Steph Fratoni made a quick pass over to Eng, who fired a low shot past DiDomizio for a 2-1 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks bore down defensively the rest of the way, allowing only one Colgate shot on goal, which Segear turned aside.
“This is a big win for us,” said Blue. “The Patriot League is very competitive, so every game is extremely important. There are only five league games, so each has big significance.”
Lehigh led the final shot count, 18-15 while Colgate held a 13-10 edge in corners. Segear finished with 11 saves for her ninth double-digit save performance of the season (and fifth in a row) while DiDomizio was also strong, making nine stops.
The Mountain Hawks returns to action in 24 hours as they welcome Cornell for a 3 p.m. showdown. It marks the first of two straight Ivy League opponents for Lehigh as Penn comes to town on Wednesday.
