Mountain Hawks finish third, fifth in snowy PL Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh cross country teams braved the elements on Saturday to host the Patriot League Championships on a snowy Goodman Campus as the men's team ran to a third-place finish while the women finished in fifth. A pair of Mountain Hawks earned All-Patriot League laurels as senior Evans Kosgei paced the men fourth while senior Katherine Pierce finished second to lead the women.

I give Evans a lot of credit," said head coach Todd Etters. "He wanted the win and ran a tough race. I'm awfully proud of him."

Kosgei finished the 8K in 25:15.50. Sophomore Sam Bernitt was next up, placing 15th (25:38.90). He was followed by junior Lyle O'Brien in 17th (25:41.20), sophomore Jimmy Miller in 18th (25:41.80) and sophomore Tyler Mueller in 25th (25:56.00).

"I thought we ran pretty well," said Etters. "Our two-to-five pack really ran outstanding."
 
Freshman Simon Voorhees and senior Evan Flach rounded out Lehigh's top seven finishers, coming in 44th (26:42.30) and 48th (26:50.00), respectively. Navy won the men's Patriot League Championship with a score of 38. American was second (49) followed by Lehigh (78), Army (94), Bucknell (108), Colgate (167), Lafayette (211) and Holy Cross (215).
Pierce led the way for the women, finishing the 6K run in second place (22:05.40) to earn All-Patriot League honors for a third straight season.

"Katherine did a tremendous job," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "It was an incredible senior performance and just a tremendous effort from her."
 
Following Pierce was a trio of sophomores - Marissa Galante in 30th (23:31.80), Katherine Howley in 32nd (23:33.80) and Jessica Kendzor in 35th (23:42.90). Rounding out Lehigh's top seven were freshman Shannon Wright in 37th (23:43.50), junior Samantha Anderson in 42nd (23:55.30) and senior Amanda Gosselin in 48th (24:01.70).
 
Navy also won the women's title with 53 points. Bucknell was right behind with 56, followed by Colgate (98), Army (111), Lehigh (128), American (139), Lafayette (173) and Holy Cross (178).
 
The Mountain Hawks return to action two weekends from now when they compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Qualifiers in Princess Anne, Md.
