BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Liz Carlos tallied a hat trick on Sunday to lift Lehigh to a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Carlos scored two goals in the first half and added a penalty kick in the second as head coach Eric Lambinus earned his first win with the Mountain Hawks. With the victory, Lehigh improves to 1-0-1 on the season.
Carlos wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as she beat Quinnipiac keeper Jillian Kelley from 14 yards out just 5:45 into the match. Senior Lena Cannon provided the assist on the goal.
The Mountain Hawks kept up the pressure in the early stages and went ahead 2-0 when Carlos slotted home a feed from freshman Murphee Greeley at the 18:54 mark. The assist was Greeley's first collegiate point.
"I thought our whole first half was really strong," Lambinus said. "We strung a lot of passes together, executed a lot of things we'd worked on defensively and offensively in training this week so I thought the first half was really good."
Ten minutes into the second half, Carlos completed the treble as she converted a penalty kick to put Lehigh ahead 3-0. The goal proved to be a necessary bit of insurance as Quinnipiac fought back late in the match.
Aine McKeever buried a feed from Furtuna Velaj at 77:51 to cut the deficit to 3-1, before Velaj slipped the ball past Lehigh keeper Lauren Mains at 89:39 to round out the scoring.
"You don't always get up three-nothing in soccer early in the second half and I don't know if we reacted real well to their change in formation," Lambinus said. "With our young back line and young midfield, I don't think we reacted as well as I'd have liked to."
Mains made two stops on the day, while Kelley notched six saves in the Quinnipiac net. The Mountain Hawks held an 11-9 advantage in the shots department and each team attempted three corner kicks. Carlos led the Brown and White with five shot attempts – four on goal – while Velaj mustered seven attempts for the Bobcats.
Lehigh returns to action on Friday, September 10 at the Penn Tournament in Philadelphia, Pa. The Mountain Hawks will take on Dayton at 3 p.m. on Friday, before closing the tournament on Sunday against St. Joseph's at 2:30 p.m.
