Mountain Hawks come up empty vs. Fordham

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team fell short in their bid for win No. 500 in program history on Saturday, losing to Fordham by a score of 1-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks held a 19-8 advantage in the shots department, but could not solve Fordham keeper Ryan Meara, who made seven saves.

"I thought we played to their strengths," Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said. "They have a keeper that's very good in the air and we played probably six to eight balls right into his hands."

After an evenly played first half, the Rams took the lead in the 51st minute. Julian Nagel floated a cross into the box from the right flank and Doug Hanly headed it over the outstretched arms of Lehigh keeper Jonathan Nydell and inside the left upright.

The Mountain Hawks had several glorious chances to equalize, but could not find the back of the net. The first chance came when junior Kevin Strunk launched a dangerous free kick just wide of the post with 34 minutes remaining. Meara then made a huge stop on freshman Ben Wysocki, who was denied in the clear from eight yards out. Meara wasn't finished as he again made a big save off a Cameron Omsberg free kick with 17 minutes remaining on the clock.

Strunk, Wysocki and freshman Austin Decker each produced three shots for Lehigh, while Nydell made four stops in net.

"I thought it wasn't necessarily a well-played game for either team," Koski said. "We struggled to find our rhythm, tempo and possession."

The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak and was Lehigh's first defeat since October 10, 2009 against Navy.

The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Princeton at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and live stats and video will be available on Lehighsports.com.
