Lehigh stifled by Colgate in PL opener

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's soccer team came up short in its Patriot League opener, falling by a score of 1-0 at Colgate on Friday night. Despite outshooting the Raiders by a 10-8 count, the Mountain Hawks were unable to crack the league's top-ranked defense and fell to 3-4-1 with the defeat.

“I didn't think we played the way I hoped we would in the first half,” Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said. “I felt like we weren't connected and we didn't do well to keep a hold of ball. When we don't manage the ball well, regardless of what style we're playing, it's hard to generate anything. We had one lapse defensively and we gave up a goal.”

Both teams attempted five shots in the first half, but Colgate (4-0-3) made the only one count with a goal in the 34th minute. Following a corner kick by Mike Garzi, Matt Schuber let loose a powerful volley that tickled the twine behind Lehigh keeper Jonathan Nydell to put the Raiders ahead.

Lehigh attempted five more shots in the second half in an effort to even the scoreline, but none of the shots got through to Colgate keeper Chris Miller, who pitched his third shutout in five starts. Senior Matt Thaeder and freshmen Austin Decker and James Meyerkord each attempted two shots for the Brown and White, while Schuber and Steven Miller chipped in two apiece for Colgate.

“In the second half, we made some adjustments and did a good job to fight and claw back into the game,” Koski explained. “We came close, but we couldn't put anything on the frame and that was somewhat frustrating for us.”

With the shutout, the Raiders remain the only unbeaten team in the Patriot League. Colgate has conceded only three goals in seven matches, including four clean-sheets.

After playing four matches in the last 12 days, the Mountain Hawks will have a week to prepare for one of their biggest matchups of the season: Lafayette. Lehigh will host the rival Leopards on October 2 in a pivotal league clash at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Lehighsports.com.
