BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh University prides itself on developing top student-athletes while emphasizing their achievements both on the field and in the classroom. As Lehigh students return to the classrooms for the start of the spring semester, many student-athletes continued their excellence athletically and academically in the fall 2009 semester. During the past semester, 45-percent of Lehigh’s 600-plus student-athletes earned a grade point average of 3.2 or better. In addition, 129 Mountain Hawk student-athletes qualified for the Dean’s List, by posting a grade point average of 3.6 or better while completing at least 12 credit hours. These tied the highest percentages since academic tracking began at Lehigh and led to an overall student-athlete GPA of 3.12, which broke the previous mark of 3.11 during the spring of 2007.
From a team perspective, 18 of Lehigh’s varsity programs achieved a grade point average over 3.0, including a department best 3.53 by the women’s cross country program. The 3.53 GPA is the best-ever for Lehigh women’s cross country and ties the all-time departmental mark set by the softball program in the spring of 2006. Not to be outdone, the Lehigh men’s cross country program posted a 3.41 GPA and was one of six men’s programs with a grade point average over 3.0 – this is the highest amount within the past decade.
For the second consecutive term each of Lehigh’s women’s sport programs achieved a team GPA over 3.0 and overall five programs established new records for team GPA. Among them were men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s swimming and diving, field hockey and women’s track and field.
Below is a list of the Lehigh athletic programs that earned a team GPA of 3.0 or greater in the fall 2009 semester.
