Mountain Hawks drop 3-0 final at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh volleyball team came up short of its third straight win, dropping a 3-0 final at Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks dropped the three sets, 16-25, 15-25 and 21-25 to fall to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in league play.
“It was definitely disappointing, after the effort we gave last night, to come out as sluggish as we did,” said Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer. “We were outplayed, plain and simple. We couldn't get any type of consistent chemistry going all day.”
One day after having four players reach double digit kills, the Mountain Hawks recorded only 35 kills on the afternoon. Junior Angelika Kopacz led the way with nine while sophomore Taylor Poole finished with eight. Kopacz was also one of two Mountain Hawks with double figure digs as she finished with 10, one behind freshman Courtney McCutchan who posted a team-high 11.
Junior Jessica Kudirka impressed with 22 assists, along with five kills behind a team-best .500 attack percentage.
Trailing 10-4 in the first set, Lehigh responded with a 3-0 run, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders answered with a 7-3 run on their way to the first set victory.
The Mountain Hawks bounced back with a strong start to a second set which saw six ties and two lead changes. Even after 14 points, Colgate won six of the next 10 points to open a 13-11 lead before closing the set with a 12-4 run.
Lehigh took early control in the third set in hopes of making a comeback, but after building an 11-8 lead, Colgate responded to pull even and take its first lead since 3-2. The Mountain Hawks hung tough, but could never retake the lead as the Raiders closed out the 25-21 victory and 3-0 match win.
Maureen Colligan led Colgate with 11 kills and a .333 attack percentage.
“Winning this game would have put us in the driver's seat heading into next week,” said Maurer. “This was an opportunity in front of us. It wasn't the type of urgency we needed to have. We knew it though; the players knew it was an important game.”
The Mountain Hawks return to the court next weekend when they host American on Friday and Navy on Saturday with Patriot League Tournament hopes on the line.
“We're definitely still competing,” said Maurer. “It's an important weekend. We'd much rather be in this position than knowing there's no chance of getting in and still having to play those matches.”
