BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen has been named as one of 20 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award, which goes to the FCS National Coach of the Year, it was announced on Monday. Coen has led Lehigh's resurgence in 2010, guiding the Mountain Hawks to a five win improvement over last season, and the program's first outright Patriot League title since 2001 and its first NCAA Playoff berth since 2004.
In his fifth season, Coen led Lehigh to a 9-2 regular season record and a 5-0 mark in the Patriot League, marking Lehigh's first undefeated league season since 2001. The Mountain Hawks enter the FCS playoffs on a seven-game winning streak, its longest since 2004. Coen led Lehigh to a share of the Patriot League title in his first season as a head coach in 2006, and this year added his first outright title and Lehigh's league-leading ninth football championship.
The Eddie Robinson Award, which is sponsored by Fathead.com, is in its 24th season and is presented at the national awards banquet on Thursday, January 6 in Frisco, Texas prior to the National Championship game the following night.
A panel of approximately 175 sports information directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will select the Robinson Award winner. Coen is the first Lehigh coach to be named a finalist for the award since Pete Lembo won it in 2001.
In the meantime, Coen will be preparing the 19th-ranked Mountain Hawks for their first round NCAA Playoff game Saturday against No. 16 Northern Iowa at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (CST) with audio coverage on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as online at Lehighsports.com.
