Randazza honored by PL; Lehigh enters national rankings

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After capturing the outright Patriot League Championship on Saturday and clinching its first NCAA playoff berth since 2004, the accolades have begun to roll in for the Lehigh football team. Senior kicker Tom Randazza was named the Patriot League's Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, while as a team the Mountain Hawks entered the national polls for the first time since 2005.
 
Randazza became the first Mountain Hawk to be earn to be honored by the league for special teams play this season and the seventh different Lehigh player to be recognized by the league overall. For the second straight week Randazza kicked for ten points, as Lehigh clinched the outright league title with a 24-7 win over Georgetown in Washington. Randazza booted two first-half field goals, covering 32 and 23 yards and Lehigh built a 6-0 first half lead. He added an extra point on Lehigh's go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. After Lehigh scored its second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, Georgetown fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Randazza recovered for the Mountain Hawks. The fumble recovery led to Randazza's third field goal of the game, a 31-yarder which put Lehigh up 24-7.
 
Since taking over the placekicking duties in the second half against Harvard, Randazza is now 8-for-8 on field goal attempts. He has 39 points on the season and has kicked for 58 points in his career.
 
Lehigh won its sixth straight game on Saturday and clinched a spot in the FCS playoffs. The Mountain Hawks come in at No. 22 in both the Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS top 25 and the FCS Coaches Poll, both of which were announced Monday afternoon. With its national ranking, Lehigh makes its first appearance in the polls since the Mountain Hawks were ranked 22nd in the final poll for 2005.
 
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to Easton for the 146th matchup against archrival Lafayette. Kickoff is set for just after noon from Fisher Stadium in Easton.
