BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a dominant performance on both side of the ball in Lehigh's 44-14 win over Patriot League preseason favorite Colgate, a pair of Mountain Hawks were honored with Patriot League weekly awards on Monday. Junior quarterback Chris Lum was name the league's Offensive Player of the Week while junior linebacker Tanner Rivas was named Defensive Player of the Week. Lehigh rolled to its fourth straight win on Saturday, moving to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League.
Since missing the New Hampshire game on September 25, Lum has led Lehigh to four straight victories, averaging 256 yards per game in that span while tossing nine touchdowns passes and just one interception. Lum leads the Patriot League with a pass efficiency rating of 138.7
Rivas earns his first career Patriot League award as one of the leaders of a defense that shut down the league's top offense. The North Carolina native made ten total tackles, including five solo stops, but his biggest impact was made on Colgate's first two drives of the game. On the Raiders' opening drive, Rivas blocked a short field goal attempt to preserve a 7-0 Lehigh lead. On Colgate's next possession, the Raiders kept their offense on the field for a fourth-and-one inside their own territory, but Rivas stuffed Nate Eachus, the nation's leading rusher, for a one-yard loss. Lehigh got the ball back and later scored to go up 14-0. Rivas and the Lehigh defense limited Eachus to just 124 yards on 25 carries, more than 40 yards below his season average.
For the season, Rivas ranks fourth on the Mountain Hawks with 47 total tackles, and leads Lehigh with four sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. He has also forced a pair of fumbles. Rivas is the fourth different Mountain Hawk to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, joining linebackers Al Pierce and Mike Groome and cornerback Jarard Cribbs.
The Mountain Hawks will take to the road for their final three games of the regular season, beginning Saturday at Holy Cross. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on WFMZ-TV as well as Fox College Sports Atlantic. The game will also be carried live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM, and live video of the contest will be shown on Lehighsports.com.
