Three top-ten finishers lead Lehigh to title

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Behind top-ten finishes from Shane Gilroy (75, 71 = 146), Steve Suarez (82, 65 = 147) and Doug Marcincin (76, 72 = 148) Lehigh won the Lafayette Invitational as the Mountain Hawks shot a 592 over the course of 36 holes. Lehigh was in third place entering Sunday’s final round but the Brown and White responded with the lowest team score of the weekend with a 281 over the final 18. Villanova finished second with a 607, while Delaware (608), Drexel (612) and Colgate and Siena (618) round out the top-five.
The biggest movement on Sunday came from Suazez who shot an 82 on Saturday and sat in 41st place entering the final 18. He answered with the lowest individual score of the weekend, shooting a 65 on Sunday to help lead Lehigh to the title. Suarez finished in a tie for fifth place, while Gilroy tied for third and Marcinin tied for eighth.
Other Mountain Hawk finishers included Duncan Zeiders who tied for 21st place after shooting a 154 (81, 73) and Will Robinson who shot a 156 (79, 77) and tied for 29th. Dwight D’Iorio also competed this weekend and shot a 157 (80, 77), finishing 37th in the individual standings, but his score did not count towards the Mountain Hawks total.
Justin Martinson of Delaware beat Brendan Kelly of Villanova in a sudden death round after tying with a 145. Martinson won on the second hole with a birdie.
In all 21 schools competed, including four Patriot League institutions: Lehigh, Colgate, Bucknell and Lafayette.
Lehigh will be back in action on April 18 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Annapolis to compete in the Navy Invitational.
