LU hoops sweeps league player of the week honors

Olivero was recognized after the Fairfax native dropped a career-high 30 points on Sacred Heart on Wednesday and backed that effort up with a 15-point, five rebound performance in the Mountain Hawks victory over Harvard on Saturday afternoon. The award is Olivero’s first-ever Player of the Week nod, and first award since winning Rookie of the Week in December 2003, and he becomes the first Mountain Hawk to receive a weekly award since February 23, 2004 when Austen Rowland and Jason Mgebroff were Player and Rookie of the Week respectively.
Olivero currently leads the Patriot League in scoring at 16.4 points per game and is just 112 points away from becoming the school’s 26th 1,000 point scorer. The mathematics major has been logging major minutes of late as well, playing 37 against Sacred Heart and another 35 versus Harvard. For the year, Olivero is averaging 34 minutes per contest as he splits time between both the shooting and point guard slots. Olivero has now led Lehigh in scoring and assists six times this season, and for his career has posted 11 games of 20+ points, including two this year.
Jenny Callan becomes the third different Lehigh women’s player to win the award this year, following Adrienne Blount who captured the honor in the season’s first week, and Sara Ellis, who was last week’s winner.
In two games last week, Callan averaged 19 points and 17 rebounds per game. In Sunday’s win over
Callan’s double-double vs. the Rams was her fourth straight, and fifth in the last six games.
Through Lehigh’s first nine games, Callan leads the Patriot League on the glass, averaging 11.8 rebounds per night. She ranks second on the team and fourth in the Patriot League in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game.
Following Monday night’s men’s game, the two teams will pause for final exams. The Lehigh men return to the court on December 23 at
