Basu reflects on tsunami as student-athletes visit school

Senior Khayla Lowe of the track and field team kicked off the assembly with a stirring rendition of the national anthem. Then the Lehigh student-athletes had the opportunity to address the students about the ideals necessary to become a better person.
One of the more interesting perspectives came from junior runner Olivia Basu, who was visiting
Basu was in visiting relatives in the northeast
“The day it happened it was about six in the morning and we were having tea with one of my aunts,” Basu explains. “Suddenly, in the lake next to my grandparents house the water shot up three feet, then came back down. The fish had to be thrown back into the lake so they would survive.”
Because December is the coldest month in
“I never realized how many people it would affect until I was at college,” Basu says. “It just hits you how many people were affected by this disaster.”
As part of Wednesday’s assembly, Basu shared her story to show the importance of being able to seek help from others.
On Saturday February 19, the C.O.A.C.H. program will hold a tsunami relief collection prior Lehigh’s men’s basketball game against Navy at Stabler Arena. Student-Athletes will collect donations for those affected by the disaster in late December.
