Lehigh athletes give back

One of those Lehigh athletes who spearheaded the whole operation on Wednesday evening was sophomore field hockey player Mel Lepko. The event was extra meaningful to Lepko this time around as one of her family members has been stricken with diabetes and is in need of medical attention.
David Joseph, the Director of Residential Services, has been involved with the event since its inception back in 2000-2001 and he says that it just started out as an idea to give students something to do. “This was an idea we had to give the students an inexpensive way to get a good meal and at the same time to rally around a good cause. It’s a festive atmosphere, a fun time for the students and a real feel-good program.”
Joseph continues, “With the help of Public Relations Coordinator Roseann Corsi, we’ve been able to get many of the athletes to participate in the event and now we even let the athletes pick what charity it is that they would like to help out. Roseann has really helped the event blossom and it’s nice to see them (the athletes) get involved and have so much fun with it.” Joseph adds, “I think that the athletes really like the selecting of the charity because it gives them a sense of ownership with the event.”
On Wednesday, several athletes from each athletic team showed up and brought their appetites and warm hearts with them. Joseph said that the number of students and student-athletes that show up to the event seems to be at a very steady level and he is happy for the growth of an event that didn’t start out as much, but has developed nicely over the years.
