Turkey Trot celebrates 50th anniversary

Bethlehem, PA - This weekend will mark the 139th edition of the Lehigh-Lafayette football game, and all of the fun and festivities that come along with it. Included in those events is the Turkey Trot a grueling 2.6-mile run up, down, and through Lehigh’s campus. Thursday’s running marked the 50th anniversary of the run, which starts and ends at Packer Chapel on the Lehigh campus.

Event organizer Jane Josephson said it’s her favorite event of the year. “We put so much planning into such a short-lived event, but it’s so worth it,” says Josephson. “This year we have around 580 competitors. They all start, but of course, they don’t all finish.”

The event was part of the many activities leading up to Saturday’s football game. Thursday night there was also a pep rally for the game, held for the fans at Leeman-Turner Arena in Grace Hall. Saturday’s meeting will continue the most-played rivalry in college football.

Kickoff for the football game is scheduled for 12:37 on Saturday. Tickets for the game are sold out, but the game will be televised live on WFMZ channel 69, as well as being radio-broadcast on Oldies 1470 WKAP and on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
