Election for Cancer Research underway
11/12/2008 3:15:00 PM | Athletics
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the past 18 years, Lehigh University has helped raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Campus organizations elect representatives who come together for six weeks of intensive fund raising during the Election for Cancer Research. This year, Ashley Pritchard, a senior from the Lehigh Rowing program, will coordinate the efforts of the entire Athletic Department with the help of teammate Maddie Warlan in its push to raise $5,000. The largest fundraising event will occur on Wednesday, November 19 during a “Jail Break” Phone-a-Thon from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM inside the Student-Athlete Lounge, located in Taylor Gym.
“Nearly everyone I know has been impacted in some way by cancer,” Pritchard explains. “Over the last decade, there have been many medical advances, resulting in new understanding of prevention and new methods of treatment. We’re asking that those in the Athletic Department help us fund research that will lead to preventing these devastating diseases.”
The Athletic Department has consistently placed within the top-three among all groups on the Lehigh campus, and to continue this trend, the “Jail Break” Phone-a-Thon fundraiser has been set up. Anyone interested in helping can come to the Phone-a-Thon and contact as many personal resources as possible to help raise money. Lehigh coaches, athletic staff members and student-athletes are encouraged to sign up for a half-hour time slot for the Phone-a-Thon by contacting Lehigh rower Maddie Warlan at maw211@lehigh.edu. There will be prizes and give-a-ways to those that raise the most money.
The American Cancer Society is second only to the federal government in funding cancer research; since 1946 the organization has invested over $3.3 billion. To date, Lehigh University has donated $600,000 to this foundation.
