BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of former Lehigh student-athletes, Terry Mongan ’08 and CalvinJohn Smiley ’08 have been honored as winners of the 2008 Academic Momentum Award, it was recently announced. The award, which is given out by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), was developed to honor the improved academic performance of one male and female student-athlete from all of the NCAS regions nationwide.
A two-sport athlete during her undergrad days, Mongan was a member of the field hockey and swimming programs at Lehigh. She earned a pair of All-Patriot League selections in field hockey and served as team captain during her senior year. Mongan started all 18 games for Lehigh in 2007, as she helped anchor the Mountain Hawks defense and helped lead the Brown and White to three Patriot League victories, which tied the school mark for the most-ever. In the pool, Mongan returned from injury as a senior and had several strong showings for the Mountain Hawks, finishing fourth in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle versus league foe Army.
In the classroom, Mongan achieved a 3.15 grade point average in the fall of 2006, and followed that up with a 3.34 GPA in the 2007 spring semester, which earned her a spot on the Faculty-Athletics Academic Honor Roll. During her senior year, Mongan notched a 3.15 GPA in the fall term and backed that up with the best academic performance of her four years at Lehigh, as she registered a 3.51 GPA during the 2008 spring term.
A double major in Political Science and Africana Studies, Smiley was a member of the Dean’s List while at Lehigh, which requires a minimum grade point average of 3.6, as well as the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the Faculty-Athletics Council Academic Honor Roll. Smiley was also honored with a Multicultural Class Award as the Sophomore of the Year, which is presented to a second-year student whose leadership both academically and co-curricularly, has impacted student life at Lehigh, as well as serves as a model of achievement for others to follow.
During the 2006-07 academic year, Smiley earned a 3.92 GPA in the fall and followed that up with a 3.65 in the spring. During the 2007 fall semester, Smiley earned a 3.60, marking three straight semesters of Dean’s List status. During his time at Lehigh Smiley was a four time Dean’s List honoree, a five time Academic Honor Roll recipient, an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award winner, a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, and during his final semester, (Spring ’08), he earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The NSCA is an ever-growing organization of colleges and universities that provides opportunities for current and former student-athletes to continue their pursuit of higher education, while working in the community with children to address social issues. Established in 1985, the overall mission of the NCAS is to create a better society by focusing on education attainment and using the power appeal of sport to positively affect social change.
