Dear Cross Country and Track & Field Alumni,
The old saying goes, "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb." But, we're beginning to wonder if spring will ever reach the South Mountain! Warmer weather is around the corner (believe it or not) and our thoughts now turn to the outdoor season.
Our first outdoor meets will be Saturday, April 2. We will have 28 athletes at Lynchburg, VA for a multi-event and meet, while the rest of the team will be competing at Penn State. This is a great opportunity for our non-local alums to get out and see the team. If you live in VA or western PA, we'd love to see you! Other highlights include the Lehigh/Lafayette match-up on Saturday, April 9 (Easton, PA) and the Lehigh Games on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. (Goodman Campus). This year the Patriot League Championships are at Lafayette, May 7-8. So, come on out and support the team.
Our teams have been competing at indoor meets throughout the winter in preparation for their upcoming outdoor schedule. Both the Mountain Hawk men and women finished in fourth place at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships held February 18-20. The men's highlights included: Lavar Pope's first place finish in the 60m, Vaclav Malek's first place in the heptathlon and third place in the high jump (Melek also earned All-East honors in the high jump). Brian Voorhis placed third in the heptathlon. Brian Ahearn earned second place honors in the 500m, and Rob Hampson placed third in both the 300m and 5000m.
Women's highlights included KT Hessler's first place honors in the high jump and third in the pentathlon; Jenni Schappert took home second place in the 5000m and third in the 3000m. Lauren Edwards took third place in the high jump. Lindsey Hinsch won third place in the long jump; and Nicole Monetgary took fourth in the 200, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 400.
Our student-athletes work hard off the track as well, earning their place on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Carolyn House, Jenni Schappert, Sarah Seiler, Rob Hampson, Alex Hudgins, Sam Kirk, and Mark Swanson all received this special recognition.
In alumni news, Chris Bryce '00 placed sixth at the United States Track and Field Indoor Championships in the 35lb. weight throw. We also know Steve Gourley '00, Dave Welsh '99, and Nate Harkins '00 have been racing well on the roads since graduation. Please let us know if you are still competing. We'd love to hear from you. Also, if any of you are coaching, please email mau4@lehigh.edu and give us the details. Coach Matt is trying to organize a Lehigh Track & Field Alumni Golf Outing for this summer, so let us know if you'd like to participate.
Finally, we'd like to encourage our alums to support our teams in two different ways. 1) Come out and attend a meet this spring. 2) Make a gift to the Athletics Partnership. If you had a positive experience with Lehigh Athletics and would like to ensure that same feeling for current and future student-athletes, please support the Athletics Partnership. We'd like to thank those who have supported us so far. Each gift makes a difference.
We look forward to catching up with you soon!
Sincerely,
Deb Utesch
