BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh closes out its seven-game home stand Wednesday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks welcome Fairfield to Ulrich Field for a midweek non-league clash. The Mountain Hawks (4-7) are coming off their first Patriot League loss of the season at the hands of Bucknell on Saturday. Wednesday’s game concludes the home schedule for the Mountain Hawks, who will finish off the season with four away games, including three Patriot League contests, beginning with Saturday’s rivalry showdown with Lafayette.
Both teams are coming off disappointing league losses heading into Wednesday’s game. The Brown and White fought hard against the Bison, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the second half, before Bucknell created the game-winning goal off a penalty corner to win 4-3. Lehigh senior Morgan Christopher and freshman Kim Eng each had one goal and one assist against Bucknell. Eng continues to lead the Patriot League in scoring with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points, seven more than the next closest player.
Against Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks were outshot, 23-8, but goalkeeper Lilia Stefaniwsky made 12 saves for the Brown and White while juniors Taryn Hartzell and Lauren Cawley played strong games and each added a defensive save.
Fairfield was dealt a devastating blow by Boston University as the Stags fell 5-0 to the Terriers in Connecticut. Fairfield now stands at 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the America East conference. Marit Westenberg and Anne Nieuwenhuis have combined for nine of Fairfield’s 19 goals this season, while Caitlin O’Donnell has seen the majority of the playing time in the goal cage.
The teams last met in 2007 at Fairfield when the Mountain Hawks won 3-1. Since 1992, the Stags and Mountain Hawks have played 13 contests, with Lehigh leading the series 8-5.
Wednesday’s game gets underway at 4 p.m. from Ulrich Field and all the action can be seen live on Lehighsports.com.
